Love is bound to make the big ole world feel a whole lot smaller. You travel the entire globe, whether literally or metaphorically, for your person who makes you swoon, feel, thrive in a way you never imagined. Neoclassical composer Oskar Kappland, who has been traveling fairly nonstop for the past three and half years, give or take, dedicates his piano-baked new song to his boyfriend of five years (as of December 5). With “Small World,” featuring Malaysian vocalist Kimia, Kappland’s words ache with heart-torn vulnerability and a soothing sincerity. Piano and a choir of strings shimmer as a lake’s serene, untouched, glassy surface – emotionally intensified by Kimia’s heaven-sent interpretation. “I have to pinch myself when I open my eyes / And you’re lying next to me,” she floats through the imagery god-like and commanding. “Small World” is a magnetic piece of music with which to bookend 2019.
