The Singles Bar: Pieter Oliver fell for a ‘Girl and a City’
The pop newcomer vows his love for a, well, a girl and a city on his new song.
Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.
The thing about young love is it can be so very fleeting. You wear your heart on your sleeve and soak up every love-struck or forlorn moment. As you grow older, often times those experiences fade into the rearview mirror, destined to become nothing more than haunted memories. But for Toronto’s Pieter Oliver, he’s an exception ⏤ as his heart has swollen and throbs with a romance that’s never lost its luster. “The crazy thing about young love, young dreams and being young is that you grow up and leave it all behind. Me? I didn’t leave it behind. I let it push me forward. I’ve had the same dream, and I’ve been in love with the same girl since I was 13,” writes Oliver about his new single, “Girl and a City.”
The waxy, R&B ballad regales a tale of adoration for a girl he met at a grocery tore but also of the sparkle and replenishment of Los Angeles, which he now calls his home. “I fell in love with a girl and a city,” he sings on the hook, situating his continued infatuations as something life-confirming and irresistible. “Living in LA, no fear,” he later affirms. The title cut to his forthcoming debut EP, the candle-lit ode frames Oliver’s vocal in groovy, quivering flames, licking at his heartstrings and dripping with sticky sweetness. “Just hold on / It’s been harder than I thought it would / Gave her every heart / She believes in me when no one would…”
Oliver’s upcoming Girl and a City Vol. 1 EP (street date TBD) features collaborations with producers whose credits include Twin Shadow and Janelle Monae.
