Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

We are always in state of transition. We may be standing still, but that’s just an illusion. When it’s time to move on, we’ll know it – and with it, there’ll be plenty of contemplation. Out of Florence, Alabama, indie-rock band Pond Diver feel the pressure building up inside of their bones, which rattle in their joints and stretch tendons until they snap. With “Over the Hill,” the quintet lean into their more folksy sensibilities – owed largely to a welcome contribution from Americana mainstay John Paul White – to reflect back inner psychological movements. “Beyond this hill, somewhere I can’t see / It takes some time, but I must leave,” rings out as a stunning ray of light peeking over the horizon. Time both stands motionless and moves at a brisk pace, and none of us can keep up.

“Over the Hill” samples the band’s forthcoming EP, Flashbacks.
