Self-proclaimed California pop, Poppa’s Kitchen carry a natural whimsy about them. So it’s not surprising their new single “Lost in Space” reads as an experimental spoken word performance on the verses, blasting into a more melodic imprint with the hook. Its unconventional leanings are a bit spooky, perhaps owed to the bass guitar’s teary driving jab. “My companion’s lost her marbles / They’re rolling across the floor / I can only take so much / Here comes a little more,” Steve Feldman describes a post-apocalyptic mindtrip. Running only four minutes, and some change, it’s so enveloping it feels like you’re taking an expedition across time and space itself.
