When doubt sets in, it can be hard to shake such deep-seated qualms. You can either confront the source of your uncertainty or ignore it completely. Indie-pop trio Raynes – of Mark John Race, Mat Charley and Joe Berger – grapple with the swelling unease as they attempt to keep relationships intact. On “Second Thought,” the sunny LA arrivals match organic piano work with neon-busting synths into an impressive pop patchwork. “We took a holiday without a better way / To show each other the space we needed to fill in our hearts,” the band lets it all boil over on the hook. It glistens in the light, as you’d expected commercial-bent pop music to do, but it carries enough emotional weight to be well worth the journey.

“Second Thought” follows the band’s debut entry, “Lemon Drop,” from earlier this year.
