Taste Test: Rebecca Haviland & the Whiskey Heart drenched in ‘Stone Cold Lonesome’

The Americana-rock band frame their new song in the heart and spirit of Little Feat.

Linda Ronstadt‘s version of Little Feat’s “Willin'” is the single greatest live performance of our time (evidence here). No one can evoke the whimsical melancholy of the highway quite like her, spinning the syllables in the dust and a breeze that’s thick and humid and hangs on the skin. But Rebecca Haviland & the Whiskey Heart certainly come close with their own Little Feat-fused traveling ditty called “Stone Cold Lonesome,” a performance that crescendoes with Wurlitzer-woven fire and drums that spark and light up the night sky. Singer and songwriter Rebecca Haviland lets her mountain-crushing voice to play with stunning color, from affecting delicacy to torchy power notes, and along her trek, the conviction showers from her vocal contraption. “Oh, you think you know me, baby / But you don’t,” she laps up her heartache. Before you know it, she’s clasped your very heart between her hands and won’t let go. It’s that devastatingly magical.

“Stone Cold Lonesome” follows the previous single, “Hideaway,” from earlier this year.
