If 2023 has taught us anything, it’s that we’re all struggling in one way or another. With her dusty new boot-scootin’ tune “Clockin’ Out,” powerhouse Rebecca Porter shares three separate stories about people who are barely treading water. They’re practically drowning, but they hold out hope for a better day tomorrow. “You learn to make due somehow,” sings Porter, her voice delicately balancing on a high wire. “Frida worked the local bar scene for years / Made an art of getting smart while slinging ice-cold beer,” she shares in one of the stories. The lyrics are yellowed and crumpled, like dreams cast into cobwebbed corners and left to nothing but time. That’s the power of her song.
