You can’t change the past, no matter how much regret warps your mind and sends you flying back to would haves, could haves, should haves on a near daily basis. Such daydreamy endeavors are fruitless and only cause more pain. Equipped with such sage advice, English folk singer-songwriter Reuben George takes flight with his acoustic guitar flapping beneath him on his debut single. “Gone” exudes airy genre handling, as he glides over traditional folk music and a self-assured pop hook, but as he calls to the work of Joni Mitchell as much as he does Jack Johnson, he breathes a sigh to let the past finally depart from his shoulders. “I seen you’ve been crying / But it’s time to dry your eyes / I know it hurts, but it makes it worse to sit and agonize,” he shoves the listener out of their chair and onto their weary feet. George’s raggedly plainspoken voice is universal but magnetizing enough to draw you into his world. In effect, he signals a brand new beginning for you, as well.
“Gone” is only the beginning of what will surely be a promising career.
