Taste Test: River Tramps borrow inspiration from Andy Warhol for debut, ‘Mare and the Maiden’
The indie-folk marvel with their debut song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
From his Cowboys & Indians series, visual artist Andy Warhol’s “John Wayne” drowns the senses. It’s a dusty, lonesome western narrative of its own right, arrested and bewitching. Indie-folk duo River Tramps comb the graphic portrait of one of film’s most looming presences for their debut single. On “Mare and the Maiden,” a strip of wicked and nasty folklore, they stage a scenic vignette of lust and betrayal, as two lovers tussle with each other even as the relationship quickly blows up in flames. It’s a Quentin Tarantino film set to music; the recording pierces and entrances with a sharp intent. It plays out in its entirety in your head, and you may find yourself transported before you know it.
