The Singles Bar: Ross Cooper calls out fakes with ‘Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy’
Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.
Among other movies and TV shows, Yellowstone has re-popularized cowboy culture. But it doesn’t always get it right. “Many of those people don’t know the difference between a cow and a heifer,” jokes singer-songwriter Ross Cooper, who’s originally from Texas. So, he should know a thing or two. With his hot new single “Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy,” he fires up the engines and lambasts those wannabes who dress the part but don’t act it.
“It’s all hat and no cattle / Chaps and no saddle / All sizzle and no steak,” he sighs in exasperation. “The talk’s getting louder / A lot of shot and no powder / Ain’t much more that I can take.”
Of course, it’s taking the piss. It’s all a good ole fashioned ribbing. “Well it won’t be long ‘fore the curtains drawn, if it ain’t happened yet,” he continues, bellowing, “cuz everybody wants to be a cowboy / Til it’s time to do cowboy shit.” Cooper delivers his vocal performance with a wry smile, a twinkling in his eye to let you know that he’s just having some fun.
“Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy” electrifies, heavy on guitar work and dusty percussion. It’s one of his strongest entries to date and what a way to lead his forthcoming record, Lightning Heart.
“I’m a cowboy, and that’s always been a huge part of my ethos, and it’s absolutely inspired my songwriting,” Cooper shares in a press statement about the album, “but at my core, I’m a writer and storyteller. It’s the part of me that has endured and makes me feel like I have a purpose. It’s so hard for me to pick a favorite on this album. Every song is a page out of my life that I’m excited to share with people.”
