Glitter sprays over her head. Jacque Ryal, fronting synth-pop duo RYAL, alongside Aaron Nevezie, gazes at the scattering of a million particles. In many ways, it’s like peering into the frantic displacement of human life. “Thunder (Solo on the Dance Floor)” honors her late friend, who died from COVID-19 earlier this summer, and it’s a sobering ceremonial that digs even deeper into human existence as it stands in 2020. “Baby, you got all the wonder,” Ryal sings. Melancholia overflows onto delicate shimmers, yet its heaviness can not be ignored. Death comes like a thief in the night, whether we’re ready for it or not.
