Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

You may want to sit down for this one. Ryan Nealon revisits one of the most important moments of his life, and he not only approaches it with gutting emotion but remarkable strength. With “Recovery,” a searing piano/string-bound ballad, he reflects back on his mother’s tragic death and his aunt taking him into her home. “Was scared of falling down,” he cries into the night, strings howling in unison. “You never let me hit the ground / Was always looking out.” Nealon pulls no punches with one helluva vocal performance, and it just might knock you flat on your back.

“Recovery” bookends Nealon’s new EP, of the same name, out everywhere now.
