Taste Test: Sam Johnson pounces ‘Like a Lion’
The San Francisco music man goes heavy on thick grooves with his new song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Sam Johnson lassos strands of pop and rock. “Like a Lion” upends your expectations, swapping out a straight-ahead hook for a delicate smoldering romp that slathers on the electric guitar with dirty swipes. “You’re running / But you’re dying,” he pokes his words through a fevered production. Then, puffs of “ooo”s scatter like morning light across the floor. Johnson configures his appetite amidst unstoppable grooves, playful but calculated, and even as the arrangement feels loose, there is a startling feeling that everything is mapped out in concrete terms. He colors only inside boxes of his own creation, and it is ultimately explosive and unforgettable.
“Like a Lion” kickstarts his new EP, Classics, out everywhere now.
