Sam Varga combats his depression with humor. On his new cut called “Mayday,” in which he waves his own white flag with a shiny, self-deprecating tone, he confronts his truths before letting it slide of his back. “She left me like a penny on its face / It wasn’t enough to pick up / I’m bad lucky anyway,” he chronicles on the first verse. “I don’t blame her / I’m no sight to see.” An acoustic guitar whirls around, a folk-rock texture baying in the background, and his voice remains the driving force. Later, he sings with a wry smirk, “I like my sin and my problems all homemade / I cook ’em up from scratch from a family recipe.” Even with such a weighted theme, Varga’s performance is inviting and deflates the pressure building inside his brain.
