When I hit adulthood, I quickly realized that the holidays were toxic in my family. I go through phases of deep melancholy and longing “that I had what other families had,” as pop singer-songwriter Savannah Sgro weeps with her new holiday song. “I Hate the Holidays” stings the fingertips, as she navigates a fractured household and attempts to find process and cope. “I don’t get excited like everyone else,” she unravels her emotions like a worn ball of yarn.
