Taste Test: Shane Leonard takes ‘Strange Forms’
The folk-rocker reflects on our inevitable fate in this life with a new scorching mid-tempo.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
We’re born. We live. We die. If we’re lucky, we might have a few adventures (and transformations) along our pathway. For better or worse, we’ll shed and discard past lives and experiences and moments which only soak our bones in gluey cake batter. Rapt observer Shane Leonard issues his own examinations with his psychedelic charmer called “Strange Forms,” which sees the folk-rock performer transmit his energy right into the greater cosmos without batting an eye. “Much as I’d like to be still with you / I know you’ll never be the same,” he sings, not necessarily sorrowful but simply as a statement of fact. His vocal is unhurried, as if already resigned to his fate that awaits him just outside his door. His hand wavers over the brassy door knob, and after nestling into his woolen jacket, he heaves one last breathe and yanks the door open. The world pummels his retina, but he’s unfazed and resolutely soldiers out into the cold. “Perhaps the fate eternal is a permanent surprise….”
“Strange Forms” is the titular cut to his new album, out May 31.
