Everything dies. That’s a hard pill to swallow, but it is life’s most prominent inevitabilities. Folk musician Shane Pendergast had already written his song “It Slips Away” when a close friend died. In the throes of mourning, he felt the song on a far more deeper, existential level that sent a shockwave throughout his body. “Nothing that is treasured will remain,” he sings. “It slips away / The world we knew / It’s turning gray, like all things do.” His voice is both one of ripe heaviness and acceptance of the unavoidable. Life will march mercilessly forward, and all we can try to do is keep up.
