Given the state of the world this year, heaven probably is on fire. With a song appropriately called “While Heaven is on Fire,” singer-songwriter Simen Mitlid takes the listener’s hand and guides them through a marshy soundscape that seems at times suffocating and freeing. “I’m trying to leave it behind now,” he sings, burying his voice into the subconcious. He twists and writhes through fear, uncertainty, and angst, prompting us to uncover ourselves within such a troubled mental state. Mitlid is always one to carve his words with a particular kind of visceral intensity, poetic yet immensely universal. He then blankets the imagery with ample production, and here, he completely drowns you in cloudy instruments and a distorted vocal turn. It’s enveloping and downright entrancing.
“While Heaven is on Fire” samples his new album, Birds, out everywhere October 30.
