Taste Test: Simon Oskar reflects in soul-searching single ‘Superman’
Swedish singer songwriter crafts a moment of serenity
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Delicate but profound, Simon Oskar taps into serenity like few others can. The track opens with a soft heartbeat and a burst of radio static and Superman’s catchphrase: “Truth, justice and the American way”. Accompanied by intricate fingerstyle guitar and bold piano chords, the effect is as soothing as the afternoon rain, full of rounded edges and soft notes. Oskar’s vocals follow this pattern to the letter, his voice blending in so well to the instruments that he becomes another instrument himself. His range is angelic, from low crooning notes to near-mournful cries, but always serene. “But I’m no Superman/No I’m no Superman” Oskar acknowledges. He may not be Superman, but this song is as emotionally powerful as a gut punching rock song. This is a genuinely beautiful piece of art.
