Trauma in childhood follows you well into adulthood. It’s an ominous shadow cast across your life, but it also feels as if you’re a prisoner forever sentenced with rusted shackles. Indie-folk singer-songwriter Simon XO observes such a tragic present of a few friends with his new song. “Runaway Jane (Two)” deceives the senses with a glimmering acoustic framework, at least in this current version, and his voice both details the story outright and offers up a bit of a soothing agent. “The less you look / The less you find,” he sings. He glides across guitar and piano, ornate instruments to highlight the intent in bold lettering. His coos are magic to the touch. “Shake the panic loose,” he advises. It’s certainly easier said than done, but accountability today is healing tomorrow.
“Runaway Jane (Two)” samples his forthcoming dual EP, slated for this fall.
