Taste Test: Smith Lyle & Moore reimagine Steppenwolf’s ‘Born to be Wild’
The American artists freshen up a classic
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
The alt-rock trio has found a new way to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo moon landing – by launching their own cover of Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild”. Smith Lyle & Moore have mastered the art of capturing the integrity of the original whilst injecting new life into it. Where the original references motorbikes, the lyrics take on a new meaning when paired with footage of a rocket leaving Earth behind: “Fire all of your guns at once/And explode into space”. It is a strangely relaxing track in comparison to its muse, with dreamy space-rock melodies and a soft comforting voice that blurs into all the cracks of the song. The trio’s creativity doesn’t end with its musicality however – the artists deciding to make the track into a musical treasure hunt. “We ran with the ‘to the moon’ aspect of the video and created a Bitcoin treasure hunt, with clues about how to access the treasure encoded into the song, video, and release materials” Smith Lyle & Moore explain. These artists have wrought a creative and exciting reimagining of a classic.
