Taste Test: Sofi Gev lets loose with ‘Shakedown’
The indie artist tries her hand at the rock genre with spectacular results
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
No playlist is complete without a “world-killer” song; a cathartic track for when you’re mad at the world and you just need to vent. “Shakedown” is the perfect example, with distorted vocals, heavy guitar and gritty instrumentals. “Crawlin’ my way out/Escape the shakedown/Standin’ on the fault line/Let’s burn it all to the ground” Sofi Gev growls, her normally clear feminine voice tinged with threat and attitude. Sofi Gev explains the inspiration for “Shakedown”: “Life sometimes feels like a sham, as if we are just running in place, trying to avoid getting played. It seems all you can do is stand on the edge and scream into the distance, believing there must be something better.” This song straddles the line between indie-pop and full-blown rock, using the best bits of both genres to create a spectacular single.
