Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Every once in a while, a relative pop newcomer comes along with a song that completely blows me away. I’ve had Soleima‘s “Roses” on a hard repeat for a month; it’s the kind of electro-pop banger, clanging through thick beats and a punkish attitude, that sticks to the back of the skull. “Yeah, are roses red and the violets blue? / So what the fuck did you think that you could do? / Change me, really? / Thank god, bless you for the truth,” she gasps. The visual completely unleashes the very animalistic and cathartic nature of the song, switching between a somber, minty cool back alley to the exhilaration of an open field. Soleima finds herself free for the first time, and the memory of her ex cracks and crumbles as all roses eventually do. “Now they’re just dead roses, baby,” she spits. Hallelujah, and amen.

“Roses” samples Soleima’s forthcoming new album, Powerslide, out everywhere next Friday (March 13).
