Songs of the Week: Brittany Ann Tranbaugh, BANNERS, & Rachel Bochner
The new batch of must-hear tunes spans heart-plucked country and bouncy pop.
Welcome to Songs of the Week, a running series with new selections.
Brittany Ann Tranbaugh – “I Guess I’m Moving On”
A bit of a travelin’ tune, Brittany Ann Tranbaugh’s “I Guess I’m Moving On” chugs along the highway. Tranbaugh says goodbye to a lover and decides to venture beyond both the physical and metaphorical boundaries put upon her shoulders. “If you want me to chase you down, I’m not gonna / I’m hanging the phone up now / I don’t want to play any games with you,” she sings. “And I hope that you understand / You’re a grown-up man.” Drums pitter-patter in the distance, mimicking her rallying herself to get going before it’s too late — before she gets roped back into a relationship she wants no part of. “I Guess I’m Moving On” is a slice of country you won’t soon forget.
BANNERS – “C’est La Vie”
You can always rely on BANNERS to deliver the emotionally pulverizing anthems. “C’est La Vie” is no different. In fact, it’s among his best, featuring a classic rhythmic palpitation and crystal-clear vocals. He twists the melody in the wind, a crunchiness present in its underpinnings. “I’m introverted so I never go out / When I talk to strangers, it’s in a language that nobody speaks,” he sings with a downcast glance before gazing up again with hope bubbling in his eyes. “But I don’t get too down ’cause I know that you get me.” One thing is true: BANNERS never misses.
Rachel Bochner – “You Don’t Want Me Like That”
Rachel Bochner had a breakthrough. After months of tying herself in knots over a love interest, she soon realized that he just wasn’t her time. It’s almost unrequited love but more torturous. “You Don’t Want Me Like That” is the resulting epiphany, in which she learns what she wants and how much she’s actually worth. “Wanna tell you that I miss you / That I’ll meet you where you’re at / You won’t say it back ’cause you don’t want me like that,” she sings, catapulting into the sticky chorus. It’s quite addicting.
