Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.

There’s always that moment when a relationship flashes right before your eyes. Its collapsing ruins echo with lingering vestiges of sweet memories, now memorialized with the last few weeks, days, minutes of sorrow. Electro-pop singer Sophie Simmons, whose musical heritage to legendary rock band Kiss’ Gene Simmons certainly gives her more credibility, flicks through a flip-book of the past as a way to cope and assess the ending of one once-intimate connection. “I said things I didn’t mean to say / All these words just get in my way,” she sings, tears streaming down her cheeks and onto her keyboard. Despite the general glossiness of the heart-torn ballad, there is still remarkable dose of vulnerable drenching her voice and rippling through each stanza.

“Baby, if I could, I’d wanna take it back / Wanna take it back to where we started,” she later confesses on the hook. Simmons takes on the cloak of responsibility for her role in the devastation but also urges her counterpart to do so, as well. “Why did you break so fast, did you break so bad / You left me haunted / Now it’s too late to hold you close / And it’s too late to let it go.”

She seeks for some kind of relief from her night terrors. Ghosts of the past continue to haunt her these days, and she may never be able to break the chains. “‘If I Could’ is purposefully minimally produced to highlight the vulnerability of the lyrics. The story of the song draws from my real life. I was driving back from Coachella after fighting with a loved one, knowing that it was the beginning of the end and wishing we could make time stop,” she says.

Simmons has built up quite a pedigree for herself, with work with such EDM blazers as The Galaxy, Yellow Claw, KidWaste and Cesqeaux. “If I Could” follows a series of other singles this year, including “Black Mirror,” “Paper Cut” and “Burn Me Down.”
