Taste Test: Stefan Alexander hops the ‘Barricade’ for PRIDE
The indie-pop newcomer celebrates PRIDE month with an evocative new song.

PRIDE means much more than colorful parades and blasts of a rainbow flag fluttering in the wind. It’s a revelation that must sprout from somewhere deep inside. Once that initial seed cracks the soil, a personal revolution can occur. Having made his long-waited return last month, indie-pop gemstone Stefan Alexander further entices us into his world with a delightfully emotional song called “Barricade.” Born out of his struggle to understand and accept himself, a journey through which all LGBTQ+ youth must toil sooner or later, the song simmers with finger snaps, other percussion and appropriately glimmering synths. “All I’ve ever wanted it so march in the parade,” he rends his heart in two, a confessional both prayer-like and anthemic. He doesn’t hold his emotions back; in fact, they come tumbling down the countryside as he lets the flood gates crumble beneath his lanky timbre. The rising waters don’t swallow him, instead he floats even higher than we could possibly have predicted.
“Barricade” clips on the heels of Alexander’s comeback single “Thunderclap,” released in May.
