The singer-songwriter writes honestly about cancer.

“I struggle with things that seem supernatural but are actually very natural. Cancer is natural. Nature is undiscerning and unforgiving,” musician and songwriter Brian Fennell, known professionally as SYML, writes honestly about his new song. “Flags” is… devastating. “I’m not hurt enough to die,” he wrestles with ripping the ache from his bones. But he can’t. It’s the here and now that can be most terrifying. The future rises out of the shadows as this intangible trolly beast that we can’t quite describe. It haunts our dreams, but as soon as we awaken, it shatters in the sunlight. Cancer is like that – but its grasp is far more merciless and taps into fears we may not even realize we have. “Fuck this cursed cancer / Send it straight to hell,” he begs. Time, like the human carcass, is wearing thin. All we really have is what lies buried in our minds.
