The Singles Bar: Talk Time proclaim this the ‘Year of Self’
The indie-rock band make a bold move with their debut single.
Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.
Italian inventor and philosopher Galileo Galilei, often referred to as the Father of the Scientific Revolution, once wrote that “passion is the genesis of genius.” He became one of the greatest thinkers in human history and a pivotal figure in the transition from natural philosophy to modern science, bridging the gap between ways of thinking and perceiving the world. He always lived his life outside the box, and without his daring, his paramount passion, we might not be where we are today. A smooth-talking indie-rock band called Talk Time, out of warehouse in Los Angeles, take to examining and celebrating “the unique thinkers with the courage to live outside the box” with their debut single “Year of Self,” a plush, sun-caked mid-tempo that works as quite the stylistic statement piece. It’s not only a manifesto but an homage to greatness.
Awash in psychedelic synths, the band ⎯⎯ of Edson Choi, Mike Nissen, Andrew Smith, John Ransom Tucker and Derek Howa ⎯⎯ poeticize all the “misfits” boldly going into that good night. “Stay true,” they sputter over springy production, popping and crackling with willowy drums and guitar flecks. “Evil comes after you.” Chilled in classic indie-rock attire, “Year of Self” dissects the livelihood of outliers, pulling the tendons apart and inviting consummate underdogs to embrace their uniqueness and soldier through adversity. It’s an anthem of sorts, both languid and compellingly alert.
“Year of Self” is the first taste of their forthcoming, five-track EP, engineered and co-produced by Math Bishop, known for his work with Silversun Pickups, The Killers and U2, among many others. The project is expected to drop later this summer with more song releases peppering their path.
