Taste Test: Simon Lunche travels back to a ‘Town by the Sea’
The indie-pop newcomer waxes nostalgic on a summer gone by.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
We all have those summers that take us back to blissful innocence and rose-colored rendezvouses. On occasion, a sound, a smell, a touch will open the flood gates, and it’ll all come washing back over our senses. Indie-pop guitar man and B-Sides & Badlands staple Simon Lunche lets his mind wander off back into the height of a summer gone by, and every one of his words carry with it a bittersweet aftertaste. “Town by the Sea” is zipped up with handclaps, breezy guitar work and a subtle vocal rasp; Lunche’s style certainly leans into the obvious Shawn Mendes comparisons, but there’s something far richer and addictive here (think John Mayer romanticism). “Oh, it’s like we’re fifteen,” he waxes nostalgic. A swarm of guitars wail in unison, accompanied with brassy horns and a nearly island-like flourish. Lunche catches himself falling down, down, down into the waves below and pulls the listener right along with him.
“Town by the Sea” is the latest in a long string singles, including “Marigolds” and “Cherry Wine.”
