Boombox Blitz: Tayls mixes pain and pleasure with ‘Star Dom’ video
Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters, and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.
Queer collective Tayls are on the prowl. They’re looking to be overpowered in more ways than one. With their new music video, “Star Dom,” they set their sights on a leather-bound dominatrix to take control of their bodies. Tied with colorful ribbons and rope, front-person Taylor Cole howls and cries as their unnamed power-hungry top dog invokes pain and pleasure.
But the song is much more than that. “For me, it’s about the frustration that is being a musician right now. The consistent struggle for a moment in the spotlight,” Cole writes in the video description. “It feels like I’m begging the internet to just fucking dominate us.”
As is their usual aesthetic, the visual (co-directed by Alden Allen and Alonna Summer) bursts with color and electric sex. There’s a gleam in Cole’s eyes that’s invigorating, cleansing even. “Gimme some satisfaction like I’m here at all,” he sings over monstrous, star-soaked drums. “Take a chance on me / All you gotta do is trust in your pleasure now.”
“Star Dom” samples a new EP, expected August 11.
