Taste Test: The Aphotic grasps onto the past with new song, ‘Work’
The synth mystery creator finally confronts the truth.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
We can’t help but get caught up in the past. It’s like a blizzard of polaroids whisking around us, and we try to grasp onto as many images as possible. But it’s all futile. “This ain’t going to work,” mysterious synth shape-shifter The Aphotic finally admits to himself. He’s been going through the motions, a sea of mirages that slip further from his brain, and his lover has something totally different in mind. “If you’re honest, you can fucking tell me,” he sings. Throughout the entirety of “Work,” a distorted and emotional set-piece, he tries to convince himself that what is actually happening isn’t actually happening. Her voice peeks through the foggy shroud, giving him nightmares he never imagined, and ultimately, he must confront the reality poking him in the eyes.
