Unrequited love is the kind of ache that can squeeze you dry. It quakes through your brittle bones until only dust remains, yet perhaps you’ll be better in time. Grandiose in aesthetic and concept, fitting amidst such contemporaries as Orville Peck and Aaron Lee Tasjan, the ever-elusive Americana man The Bobby Tenderloin Universe wears his heart loudly and unapologetically on his sleeve. The emblem glistens just slightly in the light of a bygone era. New cut called “That’s All I’m Sayin’,” spinning dust in the aftermath of Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, finds him love-locked and parched with no way to express his adoration except in song. “I don’t wanna be the lover / Of a woman on the cover of a magazine,” he waxes with poetic splendor. There’s absolutely no way you won’t get lost in his stories. He’s that damn good.
“That’s All I’m Sayin'” follows another single from earlier this year called “Sandpaper One Side, Rubber on the Other.”
