Taste Test: The Brothers Reed beg for answers with stunning ‘Irish Hymn’

The folk duo tell the tale of a homeless man crying out to God with a new song.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Homelessness is a disease that plagues millions of people every year, a statistic that discriminately strips them of any and all humanity. The man huddled under a bridge; the woman and her two kids pushing a shopping cart with only three wheels; the greying gentlemen and his shivering, emaciated border collie ⏤ they’re just…human beings. Aaron and Philip Reed, known together as The Brothers Reed, a folk duo out of Oregon, sink their bones in a vat of heart-rending, fragile truths. On their song “Irish Hymn,” one of the year’s finest entries across all genres, they inhabit the life of a homeless man, who cries out in agony in a painstakingly desperate prayer to God. “Go on and take me / I’m ready, I am / Are you just a child playing in the sand / I welcome the waves to bring me back in,” they sing. Their souls ring as loudly and clearly as the liberty bell, and we can either choose to approach and help or continue turning our back. The correct answer is right before our eyes.

“Irish Hymn” is a sterling cut from the duo’s new album, Caught in a Dream, out everywhere now.
