There will be those moments that hit you like a ton of bricks. You’ll be getting in your car, and you’ll turn on the radio. The song blasting from your speakers will knock you for a loop. You’ll immediately find yourself yanked into the past to some long-buried moment of heartbreak. Folk band The Gimmick invite the listener to wind through the countryside with their evocative and truly moving new song “Pasadena,” which has nothing to do with the city of the same name. It centers around the gutting emotional weight the group unpacks with raw vulnerability. “We never had a real destination / As long as we were somewhere far away,” frontman Robert Koolen sings. The words puff up like smoke, just enough to send you into a daze.
