The Singles Bar: The Highway Women rule the world with ‘God Made Me Right’
A new country band storms a broken system with a blazing new anthem.
Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.
A revolution is happening. Organizations, campaigns, and activists like the Women of Music Action Network are doing God’s work – speaking out and never backing down. Earlier this week, CMT announced that “effective immediately all music video hours on CMT and CMT Music channels will have complete parity between male and female artists. That means 50/50,” the company wrote in a tweet. Those kinds of bold, and quite logical, forward-thinking actions speak far louder than words could properly depict. New country four-piece The Highway Women barrel through the barricades with their fiery foot-stomper “God Made Me Right,” a glossy, fiddlin’ anthem situated between confronting the truth and burning it all to the ground.
“This song’s for all of the women who’s not going down without a fight / This song’s for all of the females who let their sparkles shine bright / This song’s for all the fearless chicks who turns every wrong into a right,” the band – of Kristen Kae (vocals), Amanda Pruitt (vocals, guitar), Heather Harper (vocals, guitar), and Drew Haley (vocals, guitar, mandolin) – trade off on the opening stanza. “Last time I checked, girls ruled the world!” they thread their solo rundowns into a unified front – allowing their support system to further demonstrate their worth. Women are stronger together, truly.
Haley offers these wise words on the song’s intent. “When we love and accept ourselves, we are more loving and accepting of others,” she says. “This song is about celebrating our differences and what makes us unique and beautiful in every way! I hope every woman and girl out there who hears our song feel empowered.” Jill Pavel, who works quite closely with the band, had this to say, “This is not just another single, this was a labor of love. The media and social media put an enormous amount of pressure on young girls to look airbrushed, flawless and perfect. Our goal with this single is to inspire young women to value themselves and their worth every time they look in the mirror.”
