Taste Test: The King’s Parade wallows in self-inflicted misery with ‘Sister’
The indie-pop band linger on pain’s vicious sting with a new cut.

Olly Corpe knows his way around a melody, and he makes damn sure to pulverize you over the head with a heady timbre. And that’s a good thing. Frontman of The King’s Parade, Corpe drowns in gospel-flecked waters on a new song. “Sister,” rooted in place with piano and lumberig percussion, falls prey to one’s inability, or perhaps unwillingness, to see the truth about a failing relationship. Its petals have long dried and fallen away, but the narrator can’t seem to get his head on straight. So, he writhes in misery, even though there’s a clear path forward. “I sold my soul for a ticket out,” he hollers through the fog. Just maybe in confessing so, he can climb out again.
