Taste Test: The Lark and the Loon look directly into the ‘Eye of the Storm’

The dark-folk duo entice the listener with a gothic tale of wrangling peace and turmoil on a new song.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.

Insecurities can work your mind into a fitful frenzy. You bury one six-feet under, only to see a dozen more popping up in their place. Meanwhile, the sweet of life sprouts up between each sour patch of soil like daisies peeking through a cemetery’s crust. Jeff Rolfzen and Rocky Steen-Rolfzen, who make up the dark-folk duo The Lark & the Loon, a favorite round these parts, layer such pressurized emotional complexities with a song called “Eye of the Storm.” Gothically swampy in nature, the bluesy front-porch stomper challenges the listener to unearth their own meanings between the two contrasting vocal lines and the harmonica’s chilling howl. “Break a leg / Knock ’em dead / Do everything the director said,” they parlay the inner turmoil to the feverish angst found pummeling them onstage. Deliciously grim and enticingly bone-breaking, The Lark & the Loon’s work continues to dissect the most troubled components of humanity. And we can’t get enough.

“Eye of the Storm” is lifted from the duo’s brand new album, 2, out everywhere now.
