Boombox Blitz: The Living Breathing reclaim child-like wonder in ‘Take It Easy’ video
The indie rock band search the wilderness for a sense of calm, identity, and innocence.
Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.
As adults, we’re constantly chasing down the next responsibility or obligation. We work; we pay bills. We work some more so we can pay even more bills. It’s an endless cycle. Sometimes, along the way, we lose a sense of wonder, and our childhood soon becomes nothing more than a memory. Out of Tucson, three-piece rock band The Living Breathing take a time out (quite literally) with their new music video. In “Take It Easy,” a folky tune capturing the light and exuberance of youth, band member Steven Natale’s son forages through the wilderness.
Weaving through a crisp woodlands, the six-year-old embodies all of us, a figure we’ve long forgotten or never realized we still have buried inside of us. “I like to hit and run,” frontman Mason Haley chirps over dark, reedy guitar chords. “And when the feeling’s gone, I take it easy.” Its somber musicality is alleviated as much by Haley’s airy voice as the visual, filmed along the Santa Barbara coastline back in January. It feels like a century ago, and therein lies an extra layer of context. A pandemic will do that to you.
“Take It Easy” mines “holding on to your youth and trying to remember the innocence before ‘life sets in,'” says Natale. “To remember that feeling and use it in difficult times and relationships. Basically, try not to stress about every little thing that life throws your way. Take a deep breath and take it easy.”
“Take It Easy” samples the band’s latest album, 2019’s What Is Me?.
