America is threaded with the work of immigrants. That’s the short of it. The California Gold Rush brought Chinese men and women to the western hemisphere in hopes of a better future, as they dubbed the entire expanse of the continent the “Golden Mountain.” It carried an allure and mystery from all around the globe, seemingly overflowing with riches and vibrant countrysides. As part of the brand new stage musical, The Golden Spike, the brainchild of Don Nguyen chronicling the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Transcontinental Railroad, The Lobbyist‘s “Golden Mountain” is a robust traveler’s tune shaken with optimism and charming performances. Players Tommy Crawford, Eloise Eonnet, Alex Grubbs, Will Turner, Tony Aidan Vo and Douglas Waterbury-Tieman inhabit such earnest longing with rapt bluegrass picking and instinctual grit, picking themselves out of the bottom rung for glory. “I can be a greater man,” howls frontman Crawford, tapping into the sheer humanity of it all.
The Golden Spike officially premiered at the end of March.
