Taste Test: The Motion Epic lights up a ‘Strange Love’
’80s to his core, crafty pop-smith lets his primal compulsions take over with a new club track.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Jealously is the bloodsucker to love and attraction. It latches onto the brain stem and numbs all motor functions, leaving us recklessly subservient to primal, lustful compulsions that might not exactly be our own. Unlocking a portal to gooey ’80s glory, blog favorite The Motion Epic (brainchild of mastermind Pat DiMeo) has an out-of-body experience as he witnesses his lowly human form absorb the unholy trinity of animalistic urges into himself. “Strange Love” burns up all logical thinking, as a campfire properly stoked with fresh kindling, and the synths begin to swirl and fold into a furiously blinding fog. “I could have held her like you do / But that ain’t me and you / I just can’t seem to look away,” DiMeo melts into the patchwork of bright neons and teary love-stains. His heart is mangled in his painstaking expedition to win over a lover with only his glittery poeticism in his arsenal. “I’m a dreamer,” he later confesses. He eventually loses his mind, but therein lies the maddening charm to his work.
“Strange Love” is just the latest appetizer to DiMeo’s growing catalog of hits.
