Taste Test: Tommy Ocean gathers a hopeful message with new song, ‘Carry On’
The folk storyteller offers a hopeful reprieve with his latest entry.

Tommy Ocean is a plainspoken man. He wields his guitar as a torch, his feet marching him and his words into combat. His latest song called “Carry On” trickles down the mountainside, and his voice bares a jagged, rock-like edge, only the harmonica can smooth out the crinkles. But that’s his charm. “I see the bumps multiplying / Supersonic / Ironic,” the words spill in staccato waves. Images flash like bulbs breaking from their luminescence, yet there’s a sweetness to his message. “Carry On / Sweet chariot / There’s a place for you and for me,” he allows. Despite the world’s smoke billowing, and the fire raging higher than ever, Ocean’s performance gifts us a welcome reprieve ⏤ if only for a moment.
“Carry On” is lifted from his new EP, Libertine, out everywhere now.
