Heartbreak can make you crazy. It’s like being pulled through the ringer and drained of all your energy. And what’s left dries up in the mid-day sun. Battered and bruised in his own way, Calgary’s folk-pop craftsman Troy Kokol hops atop a carousel to squelch the pain swelling in his heart. “Lightbulb” jingles and jangles as he searches the earth for the kind of love that’ll make him quite alright again. “I’m just a lightbulb in a box / Taped shut, full of rocks,” he sings, comfortably sinking into the natural warmth and giddiness of anticipation. His heart is surely heavy from bygone breakups, but in the stop-animation visual, which plays and dazzles through a comic strip, he finds himself struck once again by Cupid’s arrow. An uncertain future may await him, but enough time has passed to mend his wounds. Now, he eyes an adventure of a lifetime.
“Lightbulb” is a sample of his 2018 studio record, Lonely Ghost, out everywhere now.
