Sometimes, the words you meant to say just don’t come out right. Or the stars don’t align as they should. Indie-pop singer-songwriter Vealy chronicles a friendship that’s long gone with her song “Joanie,” heart-torn lyrics dressed to the nines with a throbbing backbeat. “These are the things I should have said / Shouldn’t have kept it in my head,” she sings. She kicks herself, metaphorically of course, for not speaking the truth. In a dumpster fire of a year, it’s a message we all could take into 2021: say what you mean before it’s too late.
