Sadness can be all-consuming. It’s one of the few inevitabilities in life. We all get a little sad sometimes. It’s inescapable, and we just accept it. With “Sadness Wears Her Prettiest Dress,” singer-songwriter Jacob Gorzhaltsan (known professionally as Wide Arches) surmises that perhaps sadness is all there is. “Sadness isn’t like the stories / Sometimes there’s no happy end,” he sings, a heaviness escaping his lungs. “Not a tragedy or allegory / No acting and no pretend / Sadness isn’t like they show ya.” Drums pummel the senses, and his voice seems to be both soothing and laden with heartbreak. Life has crushed his bones, and all he can do is sit back and let the experience happen to him. It’s terribly grim but wonderfully perfect. Life can and often is devastating. That’s just the truth of the matter.
