Taste Test: Wilder Woods steps into the limelight in ‘Sure Ain’t’
The gravelly-voiced mystery man reveals his identity in a new music video.

Pop music is the most transparent of mediums. Everything is shot through Instagram filters in quick, digestible bites, so there leaves little to the imagination. But when Wilder Woods emerged earlier this year, his face remaining just outside in the shadows, many began speculating on two things: why he was hiding his identity and who he could possibly be. Well, with his new video for “Sure Ain’t,” a caramel, flirtatiously R&B tilt-a-whirl, he steps into the light as NEEDTOBREATHE’S frontman Bear Rinehart. While engaging in a tango with a lover, he lets the ball remain in her court, as evidenced in the tender back and forth in the accompanying visual. Vignettes are pieced together as some smokey film noir centerpiece, and Rinehart continues to prove his staying power and presence as a modern-day rockstar. “Might make me go crazy / Might make me fall hard,” he whispers before using his voice to crush the mountains around him to metaphorical dust particles. He’s that damn good.
Wilder Woods is set to drop his self-titled solo debut LP on August 9.
