Wyndham Baird covers Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December” as though it’s his own. Sprouting between shivering acoustic layers, his voice shovels buckets of raw emotion onto a rustic structure that defies time and place. Having come about from “a period of time when I was back home a few years ago and sitting around with my family and asking them about songs they wanted to hear or that they remembered hearing growing up,” his mother shared the song and urged Baird to play it.

“If we make it through December, everything is gonna be alright, I know,” sings Wyndham Baird, barely above a whisper. The words fall like crisp snow. Even though hope’s laced around the edges, an air of lonesomeness is inescapable, as he relays the story of being laid off from the factory and having to push through financial hardships. It’s a real stunner.
