Taste Test: YAKYN swings with a gutting new ballad, ‘I Won’t Let You Go’

Mainstream country music is in a transitory state at the moment. Musically, it’s as pop as ever, and lyrically, well, there’s much to be desired. Josh Willcutts, known professionally as YAKYN, hopes to shift the status quo with his new ballad. A sweeping, emotional piece called “I Won’t Let You Go,” teasing a subtle gravel in his vocal, the song was initially written four years ago and witnesses the singer-songwriter letting every part of a failed relationship fall away. “I don’t want to believe it / But I know that it’s time,” he sings. There’s a palpable heaviness embedded in the melody, and even though he’s cut all sentimental ties, he confides that he, perhaps, won’t ever be over the heartbreak.
