Life can feel like a merciless rainstorm. It’ll shatter and tear back the exterior of your life, and you won’t be able to do anything but either confront it or run from it. It’s bound to catch you still. Folksy singer-songwriter Young Mister (real name Steven Fiore) mulls over his own ravaging past, winds that remain crushing against his present, and seeks between the layers of the pain to find the good. With “What If I?,” he upturns each pebble and moss-riddled stone in his way, an angelic voice casting a dark, long shadow. “What if I need you, and you’re out of reasons to believe / I was ever worth your time,” he lets the words flow as sharp, gushing teardrops on his cheeks. The guitar clicks along briskly, sweeping away the emotion into a dreamy trance, and his voice soon punctures the tension ⏤ and it all comes flooding back anyway.
“What If I?” is the lead-off to his new album, Sudden Swoon, out everywhere September 13.
