Premiere: The 5:55 take blissful snapshots with new single, ‘Marquee’

The pop-rock group relive old, lost connections as they grow older with a new song.

The 20s is one of the most transformational and liberating decades of one’s adulthood. You’re still wide-eyed, fresh-faced and a bit naive ⏤ but you plant your feet resolutely in the rosy twilight of burgeoning intellect and independence. Memories of boozy club nights streak together with stolen kisses and midnight rendezvouses on a rooftop somewhere, and soon, very soon, they’ll be nothing more than passing ghosts in your rearview mirror. Having gotten their start playing sorority and frat events on various college campuses, pop-rock quartet The 5:55 (pronounced the Five Fifty Five) recover blissful capsules of time with their new glossy anthem “Marquee,” stretched with elastic electric guitar and tumbling percussion.

“Take your picture with me / Why you waiting…” frontman Collin Steves probes, turning an emotional switch to give the song even more significance. The unapologetically body-rolling anthem, produced by Austin Bello (Shenna, Goldvein), begs to be blasted as the brisk breeze bounds and pounds the eardrums. “You got to do your own thing, not for me,” he later urges seconds before a cascade of a guitar solo showers down from above ⏤ an invigorating supercharge thanks to lead guitarist Kevin Goldman. The band is rounded out with Max Biskup on bass and Ryan Steves laying on saucy with drums.

“Marquee,” hitting the ignition hard and fast, aims to capture “one more moment with someone before he or she changes into a different person,” the group tells B-Sides & Badlands, premiering the song today. “The song was inspired by college shows the band was performing, causing them to reflect on the transformation of their relationships from high school to college and from college to ‘the real world.'”

The 5:55 originally formed while enrolled at Virginia Tech and later Radford University. Already, they’ve managed stage-sharing slots with such prolific trailblazers as Buckcherry and Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo. Their last show of 2018 is this Saturday (December 1) at Hampden-Sydney College.
