“I just need for you to understand me,” pleads Adam Mah. “Be a Man” finds Mah wading into toxic masculinity, as he gazes back into his childhood and upbringing in a conservative town. Archaic gender roles were pounded into his head, leaving cracks and indentations. It took him years to recover, and now he shares his story with his genre-bending ode. What begins as a classic singer-songwriter tune morphs into an alt-pop blur, possessing an infectious, ear-candy hook. “You seem a little too concerned how my interested coincide with my sexual preference,” he sings, barely above a whisper. It’s a powerful, incisive performance we won’t soon forget.
